The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of all land reclamation projects across the state. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the directive on Thursday.
He said the suspension was prompted by concerns over indiscriminate reclamation on wetlands, floodplains and lagoons in areas such as Lekki, Banana Island, Ajah, Ikorodu and Badagry. Many projects, he added, were being executed without environmental impact assessments or drainage clearance.

The commissioner warned that developers who fail to comply within seven days risk arrest and prosecution. He also said the government may decommission reclaimed sites by reopening blocked water channels.
Wahab stressed that Lagos’ low-lying terrain and fragile ecosystem could not sustain the environmental risks of unchecked reclamation, which include flooding, coastal erosion and biodiversity loss.
