The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has announced plans to impose a ₦250,000 fine or a month’s jail term on environmental offenders from July 1. The Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, said the move targets those who dump refuse illegally, litter the streets or deface the environment.
The commissioner, in a statement posted on the government’s official X handle, said the state will no longer tolerate deliberate environmental abuse. He revealed that over 3,000 offenders have already been arrested, with surveillance and public awareness efforts set to increase.
