Lagos Unveils New Building Code to Curb Collapses

The Lagos State Government is set to introduce a revised Building Code and Urban Development Policy in a bid to tackle the spate of building collapses across the state.

The announcement was made by Dr Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Development, during a ministerial briefing in Ikeja marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term.

As part of broader reforms, the state will launch the Certified Accreditors Programme, CAP, on 1 June 2025, aimed at deepening private-sector involvement in building regulation.

Dr Babatunde said the scheme will empower qualified professionals to support enforcement efforts, boost compliance, and reduce structural failures—especially in rapidly developing areas affected by population growth and unregulated construction.

Officials say the new policy underscores the state’s commitment to safer, more sustainable urban development as Lagos continues to expand.
