Authorities in Lagos have cautioned residents against the use of herbal medicines lacking approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, warning of significant health risks.
The State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, issued the advisory during the 2025 Lagos State Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, where he outlined progress in the health sector over the past year.
Professor Abayomi stated that the unchecked consumption of uncertified herbal concoctions continues to pose serious threats to public health, particularly as some mixtures may contain harmful substances or interact dangerously with prescribed medication.
He further noted that individuals who choose to self-medicate with unregulated products do so at their own risk, and the government cannot be held liable for the consequences.
The warning comes amid rising concerns over the proliferation of unverified traditional remedies across urban centres.
