The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% increase in fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, effective next week. In a notice released on Thursday, LAMATA cited the rising cost of operations as the reason for the adjustment, emphasizing that the fare hike is necessary to ensure continued bus services across the state.
This comes months after the Lagos State Government ended a temporary 50% transport fare rebate introduced in August 2023 to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal. The rebate was fully withdrawn in November, reverting fares to their original rates.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had previously implemented measures, including a 25% fare reduction and expanding state-owned staff buses, to ease the financial burden on residents. However, with the latest increase, commuters will now have to pay more for public transportation in Lagos.
LAMATA has appealed for passengers’ understanding and cooperation, assuring that the move aims to maintain efficient transportation services amid rising operational expenses.
