Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has explained why he chose to represent Spain instead of Morocco at international level. Yamal, who was born in Rocafonda to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, was eligible to play for all three countries.
Speaking in an interview quoted by TouchlineX, the 18-year-old said he once considered Morocco, especially after the team reached the World Cup semi-finals. He said that, even with his admiration for Morocco, he never hesitated when the time came to decide.
Yamal said he always wanted to feature in the European Championship and believed European football offered wider visibility and a closer link to the highest level of the game. He added that representing Spain gives him a stronger chance of reaching the World Cup with hopes of winning it.
