Lanre Arogundade Removed from DSS Watchlist After Decades-Long Blacklisting

The Executive Director of the International Press Centre, IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, has been formally removed from the watchlist of Nigeria’s Department of State Services, DSS, marking the end of a longstanding security tag dating back nearly four decades.

The development was announced in Abeokuta during the 3rd Nigerian Media Leaders’ Summit by the President of IPI Nigeria, Mr. Musikilu Mojeed. The summit, convened by The Journalism Clinic, brought together senior editors, publishers and media executives from across the country.

According to Mr. Mojeed, the DSS Director-General, Mr. Adeola Ajayi, confirmed the delisting in a recent meeting with the Institute. The move follows sustained advocacy by IPI Nigeria, after years of unmet assurances.

Mr. Arogundade, a former president of the National Association of Nigerian Students from 1984 to 1985, had been placed on the watchlist for his outspoken stance during Nigeria’s military rule—a legacy many believed wrongly haunted his civic record for decades.
