Lawmakers Push for Unified National Emergency Hotline

Senate Moves to Ban Child Soldiers as Armed Forces Bill Passes Second Reading

The Senate has begun debating a bill seeking to introduce a unified toll-free emergency number for all Nigerians. The legislation proposes replacing the multiple helplines currently used for fire, police, ambulance and other emergencies.

Sponsor of the bill, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, said standardising the system would reduce confusion and save lives by enabling faster response.

Under the proposal, emergency calls and texts would be routed to the nearest activated response centre through one simple code.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Communications, which is expected to submit its report in the coming weeks.
