Nigeria’s House of Representatives has begun consideration of a bill seeking to reform the command and operational structure of the nation’s Armed Forces. The proposed amendment to the Armed Forces Act aims to enhance discipline, accountability, and efficiency in military operations.
Sponsored by Aminu Balele, Midala Usman, and Daniel Asama, the bill seeks to align Nigeria’s defence laws with constitutional provisions and international best practices. It also clarifies the roles of the Forces Council, Defence Ministry, and Service Chiefs, while strengthening the Chief of Defence Staff’s authority as the principal adviser to the President.

Lawmakers said the reform would promote better coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, reinforce civilian control, and ensure a more professional military capable of addressing modern security threats such as terrorism and insurgency.
