The legal team representing Omoyele Sowore has accused the Nigeria Police Force of subjecting the political activist and former presidential candidate to degrading and life-threatening treatment while in custody.
Mr. Sowore was detained on Wednesday after honouring an invitation from the Inspector-General of Police’s Monitoring Unit. According to his lawyer, Tope Temokun, he was transferred in the early hours of Thursday to an undisclosed location, allegedly sustaining injuries to his right arm during the process.

Mr. Temokun further claimed that noxious gas was released into Sowore’s holding cell before the transfer, describing the incident as a calculated attempt on his life.
Comparisons were drawn to past mistreatment of political figures, including Gani Fawehinmi and Moshood Abiola.
The lawyer has called for Mr. Sowore’s immediate release, a public apology from the police, and warned that any harm to his client will have legal consequences.
