Legendary Indian musician Zakir Hussain, widely regarded as the greatest tabla player of his generation, has died at the age of 73. He passed away on Sunday at a hospital in San Francisco due to complications from a chronic lung disease, his family announced.
Born in Mumbai, Hussain was globally celebrated for his virtuosity and innovative approach to playing the tabla, the principal percussion instrument in Indian classical music. His unmatched skill earned him international recognition and numerous accolades throughout his career.

He learned the art of tabla from his father, the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha, who introduced him to the instrument at age 12. In a memorable interview, Hussain recalled that his father welcomed him into the world by rhythmically speaking tabla beats into his ears after his birth.
