Lekki Deep Sea Port has recorded the highest cargo throughput in Nigeria for 2025, handling 40.6 percent of the nation’s total cargo, the Nigerian Ports Authority has reported. The disclosure was made by NPA Managing Director Abubakar Dantsoho while presenting the authority’s 2025 Operational Performance Report.
The report shows total cargo across Nigerian ports rose nearly 25 percent to 129.3 million metric tonnes last year, while container traffic surpassed 2.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units. Onne Port and Apapa Port followed Lekki, handling 19.1 percent and 16.7 percent respectively. Meanwhile, Tin Can Island Port recorded the highest number of ship arrivals, accounting for 22.7 percent of all vessel calls.

Imports accounted for 59.2 percent of total cargo, dominated by industrial goods, raw materials, and consumer products, while exports, including agricultural produce and non-oil commodities, contributed 39 percent. Containerised cargo made up 24 percent of total throughput, with liquid bulk—such as fuel and chemicals—dominating at 54.7 percent.
