Local Drug Production in Nigeria Nears 60 Percent, Ex-PSN Chair Oyawole

A former chairman of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Anthony Oyawole, says local drug production has risen to nearly 60 percent, up from about 40 percent in recent years. He said Nigerian pharmaceutical firms are now building medicine security and reducing dependence on imports.

Speaking on a monitored interview, Mr Oyawole explained that companies under the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group are working closely with government to expand capacity. He recalled how supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the risks of overreliance on foreign drugs.

He added that Nigerian firms are now WHO-certified and capable of producing medicines not only for local consumption but also for export to Europe and America. Locally produced drugs include antimalarials, multivitamins, analgesics, and treatments for common illnesses.

Mr Oyawole however noted that some medicines still need to be imported, urging government to ensure affordability for Nigerians.
