MacArthur Foundation launches Nigeria Next to empower youths

The MacArthur Foundation has launched a new initiative known as Nigeria Next to support young Nigerians through digital inclusion, innovation, civic participation and policy reforms. The programme was unveiled on Thursday as part of efforts to expand opportunities for youths.

The foundation says the initiative will deploy grants, impact investments and research to address barriers limiting access to technology, economic opportunities and governance spaces. It notes that about 60 percent of Nigeria’s population is under 30, but only a small proportion possess digital skills.

Nigeria Next will focus on digital inclusion, creativity and innovation, civic engagement and research-backed policy development. It also aims to strengthen journalism and civic spaces while supporting hubs and incubators to drive economic transformation.

Director of the foundation’s Nigeria office, Kole Shettima, says the programme was shaped by consultations across several cities. He adds that the initiative seeks to position young people as key drivers of social and economic change in the country.
