Madagascar’s military has seized control of the country after President Andry Rajoelina fled abroad during a confrontation between security forces and youth-led protesters. Colonel Michael Randria–nirina, who led mutinous troops aligning with the so-called Gen Z demonstrators, announced on national radio that the army had “taken power.”
He said all state institutions had been dissolved except the National Assembly, which minutes earlier voted to impeach President Rajoelina. The 51-year old president had attempted to dissolve the legislature by decree before escaping aboard a French military jet.

The presidency has not commented on the military’s declaration but earlier dismissed the assembly’s impeachment as unconstitutional. President Rajoelina has claimed he left the capital for his safety, though diplomatic and military sources say he has fled the country following weeks of unrest and army defections.
