Madagascar Swears in Military Leader as President After Weeks of Protests

Madagascar’s military leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, has been sworn in as president, days after leading a military takeover that forced former President Andry Rajoelina to flee the country. The ceremony took place at the Constitutional Court in Antananarivo, where large crowds gathered to witness the event.

Colonel Randrianirina thanked the country’s young protesters, particularly the Gen Z Mada movement, whose weeks of demonstrations over power and water shortages triggered the political upheaval. He described the moment as a historic turning point and pledged to lead Madagascar into a new era of reform.

The new president said his government would draft a new constitution, reform electoral laws, and hold elections within two years. He also listed his immediate priorities as investigating the state-owned water and power company, reviving rice farming, and appointing a new prime minister.

Madagascar’s transition period is expected to face political and legal challenges, though Colonel Randrianirina’s leadership has sparked cautious optimism. He has also signalled possible shifts in foreign relations, meeting with Russian officials to discuss closer cooperation.
