Madagascar’s constitutional court has declared President Andry Rajoelina’s seat vacant and named Colonel Michael Randrianirina, commander of the elite CAPSAT unit, as the country’s new leader. The move follows weeks of youth-led protests and army defections that culminated in reports of Rajoelina fleeing abroad.
Soon after the court’s ruling, Randrianirina announced that CAPSAT had assumed control of all branches of the armed forces and suspended key state institutions, including the senate, the electoral commission, and the constitutional court itself. Only the lower house of parliament, which voted to impeach Rajoelina, remains in place.

The new military leader promised elections within 18 to 24 months and pledged to include youth voices in shaping Madagascar’s political future, though the court’s suspension raises questions about the legality of his takeover.
