Maduro appears in New York court after Capture

Deposed Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has arrived at a courthouse in New York for his first court appearance, days after being captured in Caracas during a United States military operation. The 63-year-old was escorted by heavily armed law enforcement officers on Monday morning after being transported by helicopter and armoured vehicle.

Maduro faces charges in the United States related to narcotics trafficking, alongside his wife, Cilia Flores. Both were taken from Venezuela on Saturday during an operation involving US helicopters, fighter jets and naval support, according to officials in Washington.

In Caracas, interim leader Delcy Rodriguez said she was open to working with the United States, calling for cooperation between both countries. The Venezuelan military has recognised Ms Rodriguez as interim president and urged calm, while rallies by Maduro supporters were held in the capital. No official death toll has been released, though Venezuela’s defence minister said members of Maduro’s security team, military personnel and civilians were killed during the operation.
