Magodo Residents Petition Gov. Sanwo-Olu over Alleged Illegal Construction

Residents of Magodo Phase II in Lagos have petitioned Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over what they describe as illegal construction in a landlocked gorge within the estate. The area, originally designated as a natural water collection point in the state’s master plan, is said to be prone to environmental hazards including floods and mudslides.

In a statement signed by Niyi Odusi, Chairman of the Magodo Residents Association, the residents alleged that some officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning were colluding with developers to build on the site. They warned that the ongoing construction threatens the safety of existing properties and critical infrastructure.

The petition, dated 24 April 2025, accused the developers of intimidating residents by carrying out a demolition exercise with armed security personnel before beginning new construction. The residents also claimed the demolition activities posed serious health hazards and caused intermittent damage to surrounding buildings.

The residents have demanded a stop order on construction activities in the gorge and a review of the site’s original designation. They also called for indemnification against any negative impact and urged the state government to provide adequate drainage and road infrastructure if development is allowed to continue.
