Mali and Burkina Faso have announced reciprocal travel restrictions on United States citizens following a permanent US visa ban on nationals of the two West African countries. The measures come into effect immediately in response to the US decision.
Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the action contradicts the real security situation on the ground and suggested other motives behind the US policy. The government confirmed that American nationals will face the same visa conditions imposed on Malian citizens.
Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, also announced equivalent visa measures for US nationals, describing the US decision as inconsistent with principles of sovereign equality and mutual respect.

The US move is part of a broader immigration policy announced under President Donald Trump, restricting visa issuance and entry for over 20 countries. Despite the diplomatic fallout, both Mali and Burkina Faso said they remain open to international cooperation based on reciprocity.
