An unconfirmed number of people are feared dead following suspected toxic gas exposure at a mining site in Company Zurak, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident is reported to have happened in the early hours of Tuesday, 18 February 2026.
The Wase Youth Leader, Shafi Sambo, told reporters he received a call alerting him to the incident. He said miners had dug deep into the ground and were exposed to a gas that allegedly killed 37 people instantly. Several others were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals, although the exact number of survivors has not been confirmed.
Mr Sambo said the youths were mining zinc on behalf of a company described as Chinese-owned and operating in the area. The specific mineral involved has not been officially verified.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have since been deployed to the site and have cordoned off the area to prevent further access.
