The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has joined forces with the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies to close Nigeria’s 2.2 million metric tonne fish deficit through a coordinated national roadmap. At a roundtable in Lagos, Minister Dr Adegboyega Oyetola said the partnership aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises food security, job creation, and economic diversification.
Nigeria currently produces only 38.9 per cent of its annual 3.6 million metric tonne fish demand, forcing reliance on costly imports. Oyetola described this as unsustainable both economically and environmentally.

He said the initiative would deliver a Fish Production Acceleration Roadmap, supported by new legislation, digital reforms, and projects such as the Green Money Scheme, empowering youth and women in aquaculture across the country.
