The Canadian actress Evangeline Lilly has revealed that she suffered a traumatic brain injury following a serious fall in 2025, which has resulted in measurable brain damage. The 46-year-old said the incident happened on a beach in Hawaii, where she fainted and struck her face on a boulder.
In a Substack post published in May 2025, Lilly shared graphic images of her injuries and said a rock punctured her face during the fall. She said she has a lifelong history of fainting spells, which doctors had previously but inconclusively linked to hypoglycaemia.
In a recent video posted on Instagram, Lilly said a brain scan showed that almost every area of her brain was functioning at a reduced capacity. She said the cognitive decline caused by the injury had forced her to slow down, describing the recent Christmas holiday as the calmest and most restful she has had in years.

Despite the diagnosis, Lilly said she was grateful to be alive and focused on working with doctors to understand the extent of the damage and begin treatment. Known for her roles in Lost, The Hobbit films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she announced in 2024 that she was taking an indefinite break from acting.
