At least 28 migrant bodies have been recovered from a mass grave in south-east Libya, according to the country’s attorney general. The grave, located north of Kufra, was found just days after another mass grave containing 19 bodies was uncovered in the same area.
The discovery followed a raid on a human trafficking site where 76 migrants, who had been detained and tortured, were freed. Officials have arrested one Libyan national and two foreigners in connection with the site. The search for more bodies continues in the region, more than 1,700 kilometres from the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

Investigators suspect the deaths may be linked to migrant smuggling networks, and the bodies have been sent for autopsy. Libya, a key transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, has seen a rise in such incidents since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
