Measles Outbreak Claims Two Lives in Kaduna State

A measles outbreak in Ungwan Kanawa, Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has claimed two lives and affected at least 20 others. Health officials say the outbreak is linked to years of parental refusal to immunise children.

In response, the Kaduna State government, in collaboration with UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO), has launched emergency re-vaccination campaigns and stepped up disease surveillance in Zaria and surrounding areas.

UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Kaduna, Dr Gerida Birukila, described the situation as a humanitarian emergency, warning that vaccine shortages were hampering efforts to curb the spread. She stressed the importance of maintaining predictable vaccine supplies to prevent further loss of life.

Meanwhile, officials from the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board have intensified routine immunisation efforts and deployed outreach teams to identify and vaccinate affected households.
