Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has called for the entire Nigeria Football Federation leadership to step down if the country fails to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He warned that missing the tournament for a second consecutive time would be unacceptable for Africa’s most successful footballing nation.
His comments followed Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in Bloemfontein, which left the Super Eagles third in their qualifying group with 11 points, six behind leaders Bafana Bafana.

Mikel criticised football administrators for failing to provide the right environment for players to excel, saying motivation and structure at the top remain the biggest problems. While acknowledging the players’ responsibility, he insisted drastic reforms were needed to restore Nigeria’s standing in international football.
