Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has issued a formal apology to citizens in northern Nigeria affected by the recent extended power outage, which has left many without electricity for several days.

Addressing the matter during a courtesy visit to Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano on Thursday, Minister Adelabu attributed the issue to what he described as the “weak, obsolete, and dilapidated” state of the nation’s power infrastructure which is largely unchanged since the national grid was first established over 50 years ago.

The nationwide concern was heightened on October 21, when the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, reported a disruption in power supply affecting the northeast, northwest, and parts of north-central Nigeria. This outage followed a trip along the critical 330-kilovolt Ugwaji–Apir double circuit transmission lines.

Describing the situation as “very unfortunate,” Minister Adelabu reassured the public that the Federal Government is actively working on plans to completely revamp the grid infrastructure to ensure a more reliable power supply for the region.
