Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources – Oil, has instructed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, to conduct a thorough investigation into the recent petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa.
In a statement on Wednesday, he underscored the urgent need for collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC to enhance safety standards in petroleum transportation. Lokpobiri cautioned the public against approaching overturned tankers, noting the fatal risks involved.

He also urged the Petroleum Tanker Drivers and the National Association of Road Transport Owners to work closely with the FRSC and NMDPRA, ensuring that only certified, licensed drivers transport petroleum products. This comes after the Jigawa police confirmed 90 fatalities and 50 injuries from the explosion, primarily caused by individuals trying to scoop petrol from the tanker.
