The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has announced the formation of a special committee to tackle the alarming frequency of boat accidents on Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Anastasia Ogbonna, disclosed that the committee’s mandate includes a thorough review of commercial boat operations. This encompasses investigating the causes of accidents, evaluating compliance with safety and security protocols, and assessing boat designs against established standards.

The group will also be tasked with developing a comprehensive strategy to address its findings. Key deliverables include the establishment of standard design specifications for commercial boats and recommendations for further measures to enhance safety and sustainability in Nigeria’s water transport sector.
The committee has been given a 21-day deadline to present its recommendations to the ministry.
