The Ministry of Education says the Federal Government has launched a $552 million programme aimed at improving basic education across Nigeria. The initiative, known as HOPE for Quality Basic Education, is designed to strengthen learning outcomes and expand access to education nationwide, particularly at the foundational level.
Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Aisha Garba, said the programme is a partnership with the World Bank and is expected to benefit more than 29 million children across the country. It will also support approximately 500,000 teachers through training and capacity development.
The programme will be implemented in collaboration with development partners and relevant institutions to ensure transparency and measurable results. Garba added that it aligns with broader reforms aimed at strengthening accountability and improving performance across the education system.

Officials say the initiative is also expected to tackle the challenge of out-of-school children and improve literacy and numeracy outcomes. The government expressed confidence that sustained implementation will lead to long-term improvements in Nigeria’s human capital development.
