Ministry of Foreign Affairs Denounces Fake List of Ambassadors

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed a purported list of ambassadorial nominees circulating on social media, calling it “fake” and urging the public to disregard the misinformation.

In a statement released on Sunday, ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa clarified that no such appointments have been made. Mr. Ebienfa underscored that the selection of ambassadors remains the exclusive prerogative of the President.

Nigeria currently maintains 109 diplomatic missions worldwide, comprising 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates.

President Bola Tinubu, in a sweeping decision on 2 September 2023, recalled all career and non-career ambassadors overseeing these missions. More than a year later, the government has yet to announce new ambassadorial appointments.

The delay has sparked speculation, but the Ministry insists that any announcements will come through official channels.
