Misinformation, Mistrust Discouraging Young Nigerians from Voting, says INEC Chair

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, says misinformation and distrust in the electoral process are discouraging young Nigerians from voting. He made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja at the unveiling of a revised National Voter Education Manual targeting youths.

Represented by INEC’s voter education committee chairman, Mohammed Haruna, Amupitan said many Nigerians believe their votes do not count, a perception driven by misinformation and past electoral controversies. He warned that this has led to widespread voter apathy.

He added that the trend has created an imbalance where a minority determines election outcomes, noting that a large percentage of eligible voters often stay away from the polls. He stressed that legal reforms alone are not enough to address the problem.

Organisers say the new voter education manual is designed to improve awareness and engagement among young people, who make up a significant portion of registered voters, and to encourage greater participation in the democratic process.
