Iran’s powerful clerical body has selected Mojtaba Khamenei as the new supreme leader following the death of the country’s longtime ruler in last week’s attack on the country by the United States and Israel.
Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ali Khamenei, has been chosen by Iran’s Assembly of Experts to succeed his father. The 56-year-old is the second son of the late leader and has long been considered a powerful figure behind the scenes in Iranian politics.
Although he has never held elected office or stood in a public vote, he has spent decades within his father’s inner circle and is believed to have cultivated close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

In recent years, Mojtaba Khamenei has been increasingly mentioned as a leading contender to succeed his father, though he has never publicly discussed the issue of succession. His selection now places him at the helm of Iran’s political and religious leadership at a time of heightened regional tension.
