Morocco has overtaken Nigeria in the production and export of saffron, the world’s most expensive spice, valued at up to $5,000 per kilogram. Producing an estimated 6–7 tons annually, Morocco earns between $24 million and $35 million from the crop, according to recent trade reports.
Experts say Nigeria, with similar climatic conditions, could profit from this $2 billion global market but remains largely absent due to low awareness, limited expertise, and lack of institutional support. Early trials in Kaduna and Plateau show promise, though cultivation remains small-scale.
