Morocco Outpaces Nigeria in Lucrative Global Saffron Market

Morocco has overtaken Nigeria in the production and export of saffron, the world’s most expensive spice, valued at up to $5,000 per kilogram. Producing an estimated 6–7 tons annually, Morocco earns between $24 million and $35 million from the crop, according to recent trade reports.

Experts say Nigeria, with similar climatic conditions, could profit from this $2 billion global market but remains largely absent due to low awareness, limited expertise, and lack of institutional support. Early trials in Kaduna and Plateau show promise, though cultivation remains small-scale.

Agricultural analysts believe saffron—known as “red gold”—could help diversify Nigeria’s oil-dependent economy. As global demand for natural ingredients grows, Morocco is cashing in, while Nigeria continues to watch from the sidelines of a potentially golden opportunity.
