The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned the National Assembly against plans to amend the Constitution to move the 2027 general elections to November 2026, warning it could weaken governance and destabilise the political cycle.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the proposal would plunge Nigeria into “a perpetual campaign season,” shorten the effective period for governance, and undermine development planning. It argued that elections in November 2026 would mean campaigns begin as early as 2025, leaving little room for meaningful governance.

While acknowledging lawmakers’ intent to allow more time for courts to conclude election petitions, the ADC urged Parliament to instead strengthen electoral laws, judicial timelines, and institutional capacity to ensure credible and stable elections.
