Nigerian highlife legend Bright Chimezie has dismissed claims that smoking or drinking boosts musical creativity. Speaking on the CreativTea podcast, the 64-year-old said music itself is enough to inspire performance.
Chimezie, who created the distinctive “Zigima” sound, insisted that substance use is only for personal enjoyment and not a creative necessity. He explained that seeing his audience alone provides the energy he needs on stage.

The Abia-born musician, who began his career in 1984, said his aim has always been to project joy and ensure the crowd shares in the fun.
Chimezie’s legacy continues to influence younger artistes. Afrobeats star Davido recently paid tribute by sampling his 2010 hit ‘Because of English’ in a collaboration with Omah Lay. In June, Chimezie also signed a promotional deal with Sony Music Publishing.
