NAFDAC Announces New Measures to Curb Substandard Drug Imports from India and China

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is stepping up efforts to prevent the importation of substandard and counterfeit pharmaceutical products into Nigeria, particularly from China and India, the country’s two largest pharmaceutical trade partners.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on Thursday, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, highlighted the impact of the Clean Report of Inspection and Analysis (CRIA) scheme in tightening regulatory control over imports. The agency has accredited CRIA agents in China and India to conduct pre-shipment inspections, alongside a partnership with global certification firm COTECNA to enhance quality control measures.

To strengthen inspections, the agency has also introduced the Port Inspection Data Capture and Risk Management System (PIDCARMS) to verify documents and streamline import checks.

Prof. Adeyeye urged importers to comply with NAFDAC’s guidelines by engaging CRIA agents before shipping goods to Nigeria. She also raised concerns over rejected shipments, questioning whether they find their way back into the country through unregulated routes.
