The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken control of the Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia State, after discovering large quantities of unregistered and banned medicines. The operation, led by Omoyeni Babatunde, NAFDAC’s deputy director of enforcement, was announced on Tuesday.
The agency confiscated the illegal medicines from the market’s patent medicine section, although no arrests have been made so far. Babatunde stated that the enforcement was in response to a directive from Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s zonal director, to identify unregistered products.

The operation was carried out with the help of intelligence from the State Security Service, police, and the Nigerian Army, and was simultaneously executed across three locations in the area. In one of the shops, operatives also discovered a substance suspected to be Crystal Methamphetamine (Mkpuru Mmiri), concealed in small cartons labelled as Epsom Salt.
NAFDAC has pledged to continue its crackdown on illegal drugs in the market, ensuring consumer safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
