The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has closed 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, following a two-day enforcement operation on December 16 and 17, 2024.
In a statement released on its official X account on Wednesday, the agency reported uncovering extensive production and distribution of counterfeit and expired goods. Items seized included beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food products such as noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt.

The agency disclosed that the destroyed goods were valued at ₦5 billion, describing Eziukwu Market as a significant hub for counterfeit and substandard products.
Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s South-East Zonal Director, expressed disappointment over the discovery, highlighting that market leaders had signed an agreement in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters. He criticised the apparent breach of that commitment, calling for stricter vigilance to safeguard public health.
