NAFDAC Uncovers ₦1bn Fake Chemical and Food Flavour Syndicate in Lagos

Nigeria’s food and drug regulatory agency, NAFDAC, says it has dismantled a major counterfeiting ring in Lagos involving fake chemicals, expired food flavourings, unregistered fertilisers, and repackaged pharmaceutical ingredients worth over ₦1 billion.

The bust took place in the Alapere area of Ketu, where officials sealed three warehouses and arrested three suspects. The operation followed what officials described as credible intelligence on an elaborate criminal network.

NAFDAC’s Director of Enforcement, Dr Martins Iluyomade, said the ring had been selling expired and dangerous chemicals—many of which were diverted into food and drug production.

Controlled substances and fertilisers requiring national security clearance were found stocked without authorisation.

Dr Leonard Omokpariola of the agency’s chemical research unit described the site as a crude repackaging hub with fake expiry dates and misleading country-of-origin claims.
