The director-general of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Farouk Umar, has called for an upward review of the N11,000 fee charged by airlines per flight. He said the rate, introduced in 2008, was no longer sustainable given current economic realities.
Speaking in Abuja at a retreat for members of the House of Representatives committee on aviation, Umar explained that while ticket prices have risen from about N16,000 in 2008 to between N150,000 and N200,000 today, the flight charge has remained unchanged. He added that the agency operates on a cost-recovery basis and has invested heavily in technology, surveillance, and safety systems.

Umar said several efforts to hold discussions with airline operators on the matter had not produced results. He stressed that continuing with the outdated rate would undermine Nigeria’s efforts to meet global aviation standards.
Chairman of the House committee on aviation, Abdullahi Garba, represented by his deputy Festus Akingbaso, said the retreat was aimed at improving collaboration and strengthening legislative oversight in the aviation sector.
