The Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU have given the federal government a seven-day ultimatum, threatening an indefinite strike. The unions say the action will begin if their grievances are not addressed.
In a letter dated September 12 to the minister of education and signed by Mohammed Ibrahim and Prince Peters Adeyemi, presidents of SSANU and NASU respectively, they demanded the payment of withheld salaries, arrears from the 25 and 35 percent salary increment, and a fair share of the 50 billion naira earned allowances. They alleged that their members were shortchanged in the distribution, while staff in inter-university centres were excluded.

The unions said a tripartite committee agreed in July to resolve the dispute has yet to meet. They also accused the government of failing to implement promises made earlier this year, including the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements.
NASU and SSANU added that their notice of strike comes as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU continues its own dispute with the government over unmet demands.
