The National Assembly is weighing plans for a new salary structure for legislative aides attached to the 469 lawmakers in both chambers.
At a training programme in Abuja, Clerk to the National Assembly, Mr. Kamoru Ogunlana, said the reform is aimed at improving service delivery and the effectiveness of legislators. He noted that while aides are political appointees, their current conditions of service mirror civil service rules, which fail to capture the peculiarities of their roles.

Ogunlana explained that the lack of a defined legal framework exposes aides to arbitrary decisions and undermines professionalism. He said proposals are being considered for a distinct pay system and clearer conditions of service, including improved appointment standards and safeguards against sudden dismissals.
Commission Chairman Saviour Enyiekere urged aides to continue upgrading their skills to add value to legislative work.
