The National Assembly is reviewing 161 sections of the 1999 constitution as part of the ongoing amendment process, which is expected to be concluded by December 2025. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu disclosed this after a closed-door meeting with the 36 state governors in Abuja, emphasising their critical role in shaping the amendments.
The review will focus on key issues, including state police, electoral reform, local government autonomy, diaspora voting, and enhancing the autonomy of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, announced that lawmakers would visit states for public hearings to gather citizens’ inputs.

In a communiqué signed by Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq, the governors pledged active engagement in the amendment process to strengthen Nigeria’s legal framework.
