The Nigerian Bar Association has filed a suit against the Inspector-General of Police over the new tinted glass permit policy, describing it as unlawful and a violation of fundamental rights. The association took the decision at its National Executive Council meeting in Enugu last month.
The policy, introduced in April by Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, requires motorists to obtain annual permits through a digital portal before enforcement begins on October 2. The NBA said the initiative is fraught with transparency concerns, with payments reportedly routed to a private company rather than the federation account.

Paul Ananaba, chairman of the NBA’s section on public interest and development law, said the directive infringes on rights to dignity, privacy, freedom of movement and property. He also questioned its legal foundation, noting that it relies on a 1991 military decree.
The case, filed on September 2 at the federal high court in Abuja, is yet to be assigned to a judge. The NBA has urged the police to suspend enforcement of the policy until the court rules on the matter.
