The chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Buba Marwa says the agency arrested 77,792 drug offenders over the past five years, including 128 key barons involved in major trafficking networks. Speaking at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday during the 11th CCEO awards, Marwa said 14,225 offenders were prosecuted and convicted, while 14,847,000 kilograms of illicit drugs were seized.
Marwa said the arrests and seizures have disrupted local and international supply chains, sending a clear message that Nigeria is no longer a safe haven for drug traffickers. He highlighted the recent arrest of a fugitive involved in the killing of three NDLEA personnel 12 years ago and another offender who had previously committed drug crimes in South Korea.
