The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the seizure of illegal drugs worth over N3.4 billion in Lagos and Rivers states. Among the drugs recovered were 3.5 million opioid pills and 163,000 bottles of codeine syrup. According to a statement by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA working with customs officers, intercepted the codeine at the Port Harcourt Port Complex on April 29, while in Lagos, 1.5 million opioid pills were recovered from Olarenwaju Wahab in Ojo.
At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, NDLEA operatives seized 20kg of Canadian Loud cannabis concealed in chocolate tins, among other items. This led to the arrest of three suspects between April 30 and May 3. In a separate bust, businessman Bobby Morris Osas was arrested attempting to board a flight to Italy with over 8,000 tramadol pills. Additionally, NDLEA officers thwarted an attempt to ship tramadol and skunk concealed in body cream bottles to Iraq.

He further added that NDLEA operatives in Kaduna intercepted 942 explosives hidden in a sack during a search of a commercial vehicle., leading to the arrest of 30-year-old Nura Sani Muhammad better known as Nura Hariji. Further operations across the country led to the seizure of various opioids, including tramadol, codeine syrup, and pentazocine injections, and the arrest of multiple suspects in Edo, Anambra, and Niger states.
While emphasising NDLEA’s national efforts to combat drug abuse continue, with awareness campaigns held across Nigerian universities and schools, Babafemi further revealed that following a 10-month investigation, they arrested Dominic Chiegozie Obijiaku, a wanted drug kingpin who was implicated in the importation of over 2.6million tramadol pills intercepted at the Apapa seaport in Lagos.
