At least 169 people have been killed in an attack on Abiemnhom County in South Sudan’s Ruweng Administrative Area, local officials say. The assault was carried out on Sunday by armed youths from Mayom County in neighbouring Unity State, according to Information Minister James Monyluak Mijok.
Mr Mijok said 90 of the dead were civilians, including women and children, while 79 were government soldiers. Fifty others were injured, and the county commissioner and executive director were among those killed. Authorities say the fighting lasted several hours before the army regained control.
Health Minister Elizabeth Achol told AFP that the bodies were buried in a mass grave on Monday and warned the death toll could rise if more victims are found.
