Nearly 50 Dead as Hurricane Melissa Devastates Caribbean

Nearly 50 people have been confirmed dead after Hurricane Melissa tore through the Caribbean, leaving widespread destruction across Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Officials say flooding remains severe in some areas, while thousands of residents have been displaced and communications disrupted.

The US National Hurricane Center described Melissa as one of the most powerful storms ever recorded, with winds reaching 155 kilometres per hour. The storm tied the 1935 record for the most intense hurricane to make landfall when it hit Jamaica on Tuesday, flattening homes and damaging critical infrastructure.

Haiti has reported 30 deaths, while Jamaica’s Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon confirmed 19 fatalities in the country’s western parishes. More than 700,000 people were evacuated in Cuba, where authorities say the storm caused severe flooding, power cuts and damage to thousands of homes.

International aid is being mobilised, with the United States and United Kingdom sending rescue teams and emergency funding to affected nations. The United Nations and climate experts have described Melissa as a stark reminder of the growing threat posed by climate change and the urgent need for stronger global action.
