Nigeria’s National Economic Council has endorsed the nationwide rollout of solar-powered irrigation pumps developed by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure. The technology, designed to replace petrol-powered systems, is expected to cut farmers’ costs, boost productivity, and expand dry-season cultivation ahead of the 2025 planting cycle.

Meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Council also directed the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning to arrange funding that will allow large-scale production and timely distribution of the pumps. Vice President Kashim Shettima, who chaired the meeting, described the innovation as proof of Nigeria’s capacity to compete globally.
He said the initiative aligns with wider government measures to strengthen food security, including farmer insurance schemes, new credit facilities, and legislation aimed at improving value addition across the agricultural sector.
